Metaxa *****
"Metaxa (Greek: Μεταξά) is a Greek distilled spirit invented by Spyros Metaxas in 1888. It is a blend of brandy and wine made from sun-dried Savatiano, Sultana and Black Corinth grape varieties. It is then blended with an aged Muscat wine from the Greek islands of Samos and Lemnos. It is exported to over 60 countries."

Morning dreams
"Morning Dreams"
When I get you home
I'll never let you go
Too bad it never lasts long
When I'm all alone
You creep into my mind
And I pretend it's you by my side
You look a little better, each day to me
And you try a little harder each day to be
Everything that I wanted in you
And do everything that I need you to do
Morning dreams come true
Cause I wake up next to you
And only for your eyes
Do I sing these lullabies
Everything you do is all I need to know
Cause I'm yours
I'll never let you down
Anywhere you are is where I want to be
Anywhere, anytime or place
You look a little better, each day to me
And you try a little harder each day to be
Everything that I wanted in you
And do everything that I need you to do
Morning dreams come true
Cause I wake up next to you
And only for your eyes
Do I sing these lullabies
You look a little better, each day to me
And you try a little harder each day to be
Morning dreams come true
Cause I wake up next to you
And only for your eyes
Do I sing these lullabies
Morning dreams come true
Morning dreams come true
Morning dreams come true
Morning dreams come true

Galaxy
While most normal people were doing what normal people do on a saturday evening, I was down at Coal Cliff up to my ankles in cool, fresh seawater trying to capture a frame of our majestic galaxy until the early hours.
I thought coal cliff would be remote enough to not suffer from much light pollution but it seems that all the ships waiting out at sea to dock at port kembla were intent on burning their lights brightly just to spite me :(
This made it pretty difficult to make a decent shot, but I did what I could and applied curves layer after curves layer in photoshop until the colours and contrast were what you see here.
Not bad, but I'm looking forward to having another try!
White Coral Bells
I love looking at spring trees in bloom and know the names of most but I have no idea what kind of tree this is. These delicate bells against the blue sky were just gorgeous. The title is from a song I learned as a child. I think it refers to lilies of the valley. I'm still very very busy but try to make time for a photo now and then. Happy weekend!

Cosmic Loneliness
Cosmic Loneliness
Since the dawn of the human mind, we've populated the sky with gods, in medieval times saints and madonnas appeared; in this technological age humans have imagined a sky buzzing with flying saucers and hydrocephalic bug-eyed aliens. Even if you are not given to flights of fancy it's hard to look up at the stars without feeling a longing for some confirmation of other distant intelligences. For decades now, sophisticated instruments have searched the sky for whispered echoes of consciousness. No answer comes ...
In a virtually infinite universe of evolving worlds it's counter-intuitive to consider that we could be an anomaly, a singularity. The hard reality is that in even a cosmos teeming with biology, the very scale and size of the universe, the literally unimaginable distance between the stars , the improbable pile of contingent circumstances which have resulted in ourselves ... probably conspire to make life so vanishingly rare, from our provincial perspective, as to ensure that we are well and truly alone, for all practical purposes.
It's a lonely observation , but one of those realizations, like the inevitability of death, which shouldn't be denied, but embraced as part and parcel of the marvel of existence ...

Infographic: What you should know about ACTA
Infographic: What you should know about ACTA
ACTA, a controversial agreement about counterfeiting and online copyright infringements, has been signed so far by 30 countries. In coming months Parliament will be able to decide its fate in the EU by either approving or rejecting it.
* But what is this all about?
* What does ACTA seek to achieve?
* Why has it provoked protests from groups across the world?
* How will the Parliament come to a decision and how will you be able to follow the process?
* What is ACTA about?
* What will be covered by it?
* Who takes part in ACTA?
* Why is it controversial?
* Which countries have already signed it?
* Why is the role of the European Parliament crucial?
* What options are available to the European Parliament?
* How will the European Parliament come to a decision?
* What has the European Parliament said so far about ACTA?
* What happens if the European Parliament votes in favour?
* What happens if the European Parliament rejects it?
* How will I be able to find out the latest developments on this in the European Parliament?

Mercury Close-up: Hovnatanian Crater (NASA, MESSENGER, 01/16/12)
Mercury Close-up: Hovnatanian Crater (NASA, MESSENGER, 01/16/12), originally uploaded by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center.
Editor's note: I believe this striking crater on Mercury is named for the nineteenth century Armenian painter, Hakop Hovnatanian.
Hovnatanian crater was formed by an object that impacted at a very oblique angle, causing the crater to appear elliptical. Although impacts at most angles produce circular craters, impacts with incidence angles <15º (from the horizontal) will create elliptical craters. The rays of Hovnatanian form a "butterfly" pattern, which also indicates an oblique impact.

the eye of the beholder
Cerro Paranal is an astronomers paradise with its stunningly dark, steady and transparent sky. Located in the barren Atacama Desert of Chile it is home to some of the world's leading telescopes. Operated by the European Southern Observatory (eso.org) the Very Large Telescope (VLT) is located on Paranal, composed of four 8 m telescopes which can combine their light to make a giant telescope by interferometry. Four smaller auxiliary telescopes, each 1.8 m in aperture, are important elements of the VLT interferometer. This footage is made during an imaging expedition to Paranal assigned by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Achaia Clauss Wine Co., Achaia, Peloponnesus, Greece
Today, the Achaia Clauss Wine Co. is one of the largest wineries in Greece and the largest exporter of cork-sealed Greek wine exporting to forty-two countries. Its portfolio includes thirty-two wines and four spirits ranging from young, refreshing wines to boutique-style wines with depth and richness. The winery produces an excess of three million cases of wine each year on facilities capable of handling 20,000 bottles per hour. In the recent past, Nick Karapanos, the owner of Achaia Clauss, invested over $10 million in state-of-the-art equipment and has contracted with growers all over Greece to meet the company's growing needs. Its most famous products are Demestica, Mavrodaphne, Muscat, Nemea, Chateau Clauss, Danielis, Santa Helena, Retsina, and Ouzo. These wines have won resounding critical acclaim and have withstood the test of time. Each year, the winery receives 250,000 visitors, who have the opportunity to taste these beautiful wines, and to visit cellars, which house ornate casks dedicated to visiting dignitaries that date back to Empress Elizabeth of Austria in 1885.
