Kuriositas: The Titty Fruit – A Crop like No Udder
Although the fruit (or indeed any part of the plant) is toxic to humans it does have some medicinal purposes. As well as being used to treat general tetchiness it is said to be very good in the fight against athlete’s foot. Its variety of vernacular names, however, surely says as much about human nature as it does the fruit.

Αντώνης Βγόντζας: «Δε μιλάμε. Μεταξύ μας.»
Δε μιλάμε. Μεταξύ μας. Δε μιλάμε με τους συνοδοιπόρους και συναγωνιστές. Με αυτούς που ανταμώνουμε. Είτε από τύχη. Είτε προγραμματισμένα. Δε μιλάμε με τους αντίθετους. Τους αντιπάλους μας. Τους αντιδίκους μας. Δε λέμε ποτέ τι πραγματικά σκεφτόμαστε. Δεν εκφράζουμε άνετα και με καθαρά λόγια και όρους τι σκοπεύουμε.
Δε μιλάμε μεταξύ μας. Και τα δίνουμε όλα για την αντιδικία. Την αντιπαλότητα. Τη ρήξη. Σα να είναι αυτή ολόκληρη και βαθύτερη κουλτούρα μας. Πρέπει να το συνομολογήσουμε. Δε συζητάμε τα προβλήματά μας. Δεν το μάθανε καλά. Κρίμας! Γιατί η διαλεκτική σκέψη σε αυτό τον τόπο γεννήθηκε. Από τους πατεράδες μας. Από ανθώρπους αληθινά μεγάλους.
Τι σχέση έχουν όλα αυτά με την έξαρση της βίας; Με τα κρούσματα να διαδέχονται το ένα το άλλο; Με τα θύματα να αυξάνονται δραματικά; Με το αίσθημα της ασφάλειας και της αμοιβαίας εμπιστοσύνης μεταξύ των πολιτών να καταρρακώνεται ή και να συντρίβεται;
Έχει! Και παραέχει σχέση! Όταν οι πολιτικές δυνάμεις δε συνεννοούνται μεταξύ τους. Όταν ανταλλάσουν αδαπάνως πυρά και ¨πάρθεια βέλη¨. Όταν το εθνικό κοινοβούλιο είναι μονίμως αρένα. Όταν στις κεντρικές πλατείες διεξάγονται μάχες με αληθινά πυρά. Όταν η διαβούλευση, που τόσα υποσχέθηκε, κατάντησε γράμμα κενό. Όταν οι διάφορες κοινωνικές ομάδες κατεβάζουν τον ορίζοντα των στόχων τους στο χαμηλό ύψος των συντεχνιακών συμφερόντων τους.
Ε,τότε, η βία στους δρόμους θα κορυφωθεί. Η βία ενάντια στους αδύνατους θα οξυνθεί. Οι συμπλοκές θα φτάσουν στις γειτονιές μας. Και ο απέναντι θα είναι μονίμως εχθρός μας.
Ε,τότε η δημοκρατία θα απολέσει όλο το ηθικό και ιδεολογικό περιεχόμενό της.

Sitting is Killing You
As we enter the second decade of the 21st century, there is one thing nearly all modern Americans have in common: we sit all the time. Though our great shift towards computer-based work has done great things for productivity, it has, unfortunately, done terrible things for our health. From increased risk of heart disease and obesity in the long term, to sharply hampered cholesterol maintenance in the short term, the negative health effects of sitting are starting to weigh heavily against the benefits. Even the medical field – the greatest advocates and reducing sitting time – is plagued by this new health issue. Though doctors and nurses get plenty of walking time, it usually falls to the secretaries, billers, and coders to do all the sitting. And, as we can see, something has to change.

η Δημοκρατική Συμμαχία ..για την μέρα της Ευρώπης
Από το γραφείο Τύπου της Δημοκρατικής Συμμαχίας εκδόθηκε η εξής ανακοίνωση:«Η 9η Μαΐου είναι μια ημέρα γεμάτη συμβολισμούς για κάθε ευρωπαίο πολίτη. Σαν σήμερα το 1945 τερματίστηκε ο Β’ Παγκόσμιος πόλεμος, σαν σήμερα το 1950 ξεκίνησε η οικοδόμηση της ενωμένης Ευρώπης με τη δήλωση Schuman. Σε αυτή την 60χρονη ενοποιητική πορεία πετύχαμε πολλά. Διασφαλίστηκε η ειρήνη, η συνεργασία, η ευημερία και η ανάπτυξη στη γηραιά ήπειρο. Ξεπεράστηκαν οι προαιώνιες έχθρες και αντιπαλότητες μεταξύ των ευρωπαϊκών κρατών. Τέθηκαν οι βάσεις για τη δημιουργία μιας πραγματικής «ένωσης κρατών και λαών», στη βάση της αλληλοκατανόησης, της συνύπαρξης, της αλληλεγγύης, της συνοχής και του κοινού πολιτισμού.
Η πορεία αυτή δεν ήταν απρόσκοπτη και χωρίς δυσκολίες. Κάθε άλλο. Η Ευρώπη και η κοινή της προοπτική σφυρηλατήθηκαν μέσα από τα προβλήματα και τις αντιξοότητες. Η ενοποιητική διαδικασία ενδυναμώθηκε και μεγεθύνθηκε μέσα από τη διαχείριση των κρίσεων που κατά καιρούς ανέκυπταν. Όπως πολύ σοφά υποστήριζε κι ο Jean Monnet «η Ευρώπη θα φτιαχτεί μέσα από τις κρίσεις, και ότι η Ευρώπη θα είναι το σύνολο των απαντήσεων στις κρίσεις αυτές». Με άλλα λόγια η Ευρώπη προχωράει μπροστά κάθε φορά που η απάντηση που δίνει σ’ ένα πρόβλημα είναι περισσότερη Ευρώπη.
Σήμερα, με την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση ν’ αντιμετωπίζει τη χειρότερη οικονομική κρίση από την ίδρυσή της, αλλά και με τη χώρα μας ν’ αποτελεί το επίκεντρο της κρίσης αυτής, τα λόγια του Jean Monnet είναι πιο επίκαιρα από ποτέ. Όχι για να αποτελέσουν άλλοθι για τις δικές μας παραλείψεις και σφάλματα, αλλά για να οριοθετήσουν το μονοπάτι της λύσης που θα δημιουργήσει περισσότερη και ποιοτικότερη Ευρώπη.
Για τη χώρα μας ο δρόμος είναι απλός και ξεκάθαρος. Τομές και ρήξεις παντού, σε όλα αυτά που μας κρατούν καθηλωμένους στο χθες. Σε όλα αυτά που μας πληγώνουν ως έθνος και που μας αποστερούν το μέλλον. Δεν φταίει η Ευρώπη για τα λάθη μας. Δεν φταίει η Ευρώπη για το οικονομικό και κοινωνικό μας αδιέξοδο. Πρωτίστως ευθυνόμαστε εμείς. Πρέπει να το παραδεχθούμε. Εμείς είμαστε αυτοί που δημιουργήσαμε ένα αναποτελεσματικό κράτος και μια μη παραγωγική κρατική μηχανή. Σε αυτή τη δύσκολη συγκυρία αυτό που δεν πρέπει ν’ απολέσουμε ως Έλληνες, είναι η ευρωπαϊκή μας ταυτότητα και συνείδηση. Δεν πρέπει να χάσουμε την πίστη μας στην ενωμένη Ευρώπη. Γιατί δεν είμαστε απέναντι και στα χαρακώματα με τους υπόλοιπους ευρωπαίους. Είμαστε σε πόλεμο με τον κακό μας εαυτό. Η Ευρώπη εδώ και 30 χρόνια είναι το σπίτι μας, είναι το κοινό μας μέλλον».

Monday, May 2, 2011 at 8:00AMThis is a pretty simple one, but I appreciate when companies are willing to experiment with infographics and even design their own. The Real Cost of Dating is from Match.com and based on a survey they performed in March of 2011. So here, the company is putting their own, proprietary data out on the web to inform readers and draw them into the match.com blog.
First, I like the talk bubble used as a pie chart. It really helps reinforce the data as “Men say…”, “Women say…”. Although I think the design is too subtle. It took me a minute to even see that there were too colors in the bubbles.
Persoanlly, I think this design is very text-heavy, and much of the text is redundant. For example, each statistic includes the text “…of women” when they are already in a section of the infographic of just statistics from women.
Overall, good first swing at using infographics in your marketing strategy, and I hope they do more.

NASA launches space shuttle Endeavour's final flight image
Commissioned in 1987 to replace the space shuttle Challenger, which was lost in 1986, and named by elementary school students after the British HMS Endeavour, the sailing ship that took Captain James Cook on his first travels, the space shuttle Endeavour has earned a short but noteworthy place in NASA's history of space exploration.
The youngest of NASA's shuttle fleet, Endeavour was built with unique upgrades from previous orbiters, including the drag parachute used on landing; modified electrical and plumbing systems in the Extended Duration Orbiter (EDO), to allow for extended stays on board (up to 28 days); more-advanced computers and navigation systems; a solid-state star tracker; and improved steering mechanisms.
As a tool of space innovation, Endeavour has contributed to projects that have had far-reaching impacts on the space program, including the major Hubble Space Telescope repairs that improved Hubble's clarity, and 10 dockings with the International Space Station, during which Endeavour delivered and installed major sections of the international space outpost. This week will see the launch of mission STS-134, Endeavour's 25th and final flight, and the second-to-last space shuttle mission ever.
