DESCRIPTION

A classic dessert takes an easy turn with Pillsbury® refrigerated pie crust.

INGREDIENTS

1 Pillsbury® refrigerated pie crust (from 15-oz box), softened as directed on box
1 package unflavored gelatin
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
1/4 cup water
4 pasteurized eggs, separated
1 teaspoon grated lime peel
2 drops green food color
1 cup whipping (heavy) cream
Sweetened whipped cream, if desired

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oven to 450°F. Make pie crust as directed on box for One-Crust Baked Shell using 9-inch glass pie pan. Bake 9 to 11 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool completely, about 30 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, in 1-quart saucepan, combine gelatin, 1/2 cup of the sugar, the lime juice, water and egg yolks. Cook over medium heat 6 to 7 minutes, stirring constantly, until mixture boils and thickens slightly. Remove from heat; stir in lime peel and food color. Pour mixture into large bowl. Refrigerate until mixture mounds slightly, about 45 minutes.

3. In large bowl, beat egg whites with electric mixer on high speed until soft peaks form. Gradually add remaining 1/2 cup sugar, beating until stiff peaks form. In small bowl, beat whipping cream until stiff peaks form.

4. Gently stir egg whites and whipped cream into cooled lime mixture. Spoon into cooled baked shell. Refrigerate until firm, about 2 hours. Serve topped with sweetened whipped cream. Store in refrigerator.

if by Rudyard Kipling

 If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

Rudyard Kipling

Will we stop mass extinction?

I've just signed an urgent global petition supporting a new treaty to prevent mass extinction.

The petition will be delivered Friday at UN talks in Japan -- check out the email below and sign on here: http://www.avaaz.org/en/the_end_of_whales/98.php?

Dear friends, There are only 300 northern right whales left, and 99% of blue whales have been wiped out.

These majestic giants are endangered species, and their case is being played out across the world, time and again.

In fact, one third of all life forms on the planet are on the brink of extinction.

The natural world is being crushed by human activity, waste and exploitation.

But there is a plan to save it -- a global agreement to create, fund and enforce protected areas covering 20% of our lands and seas by 2020.

And right now, 193 governments are meeting in Japan to address this crisis. We have just 4 days left in this crucial meeting.

Experts say that politicians are hesitant to adopt such an ambitious goal, but that a global public outcry could tip the balance, making leaders feel the eyes of the world upon them.

Click to sign the urgent 20/20 petition, and forward this email widely -- the message will be delivered directly to the meeting in Japan: http://www.avaaz.org/en/the_end_of_whales98.php?

Ironically, 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity.

By now, our governments were supposed to have "achieved a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss.
" They have failed, consistently caving to industry when given a choice between narrow profit and protecting species.
Our animals, plants, oceans, forests, soils, and rivers are choking under immense burdens from over-exploitation and other pressures.
Humans are the primary cause of this destruction. But we can turn it around -- we've saved species from extinction before.
The causes of biodiversity decline are vast, and stopping them is going to require a move away from empty piecemeal promises with no clarity on who will pay, to a bold plan with strict enforcement and serious funding.
The 20/20 plan is precisely that: governments will be forced to execute strict programmes to ensure that 20% of our earth is protected by the 2020 deadline, and massively scale up funding. It has to be now.
All over the world the picture is beginning to look bleaker -- there are only 3,200 tigers left in the wild, our oceans are running out of fish, and we're losing unique food sources to large mono-plantations.
Nature is resilient, but we have to give it a safe place to bounce back. That's why this meeting is key -- it's a watershed moment to accelerate action based on clear commitments that protect nature's capital.
If our governments feel overwhelming public pressure right now to be courageous, we can jolt them to commit to the 20/20 plan at this meeting. But it's going to take every one of us to get that message to echo around the convention in Japan.
Sign this urgent petition below, then forward it widely: http://www.avaaz.org/en/the_end_of_whales98.php?

Zero Gravity Airplane Seating

While its garish yellow crocodile skin might not be your upholstery of choice (it was intended to be eye-catching at a recent exhibition), the Zero Gravity recliner is the latest in airplane seating and is one seriously comfy ride.

Created by B/E Aerospace, the Zero Gravity seat elevates your knees above your heart to increase circulation flow, reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis. And the larger angle between your pelvis and back probably makes it more comfortable than even your bed at home. No word yet on which airline will introduce it first, although early-adopting passengers will most certainly have to pony up for a business- or first-class ticket to try it.

We like this a whole lot more than industry plans to test "standing seats."

The Internet Is Still Not For Everyone – woorkup.com

It radically changed the way we all interact and it has become the main medium of mass communication of our (if not all) time. Nevertheless it is used by just a few. How and why the Internet is still a technology available to less than 29% of the global population.

The Wounded Cupid - Anacreontea

*Anacreontea (Anonymous c.100 BC-600 AD) Translated by Robert Herrick (1591-1674) The wounded Cupid. Song.

Cupid as he lay among Roses, by a Bee was stung. Whereupon in anger flying To his Mother, said thus crying; Help! O help! your Boy's a dying. And why, my pretty Lad, said she? Then blubbering, replyed he, A winged Snake has bitten me, Which Country people call a Bee. At which she smil'd; then with her hairs And kisses drying up his tears: Alas! said she, my Wag! if this Such a pernicious torment is: Come, tel me then, how great's the smart Of those, thou woundest with thy Dart!

*Anacreon was a native of the Greek city of Teos in Asia Minor and one of the most popular poets of his time. A translation of his (supposed) works was so popular in the late 1700s that his name was used by the Anacreontic Society in London. It was this group that composed the Anacreontic Song whose tune would be reused for the national anthem of the United States. As that song makes clear, Anacreon was chiefly known for his poems on love and wine. Unfortunately, the translated poems in question were not actually written by Anacreon, instead they were the Anacreontea - anonymous poems written between AD 100 and 600 BC in imitation of Anacreon's work. Anacreon's actual works are claimed to have filled at least five volumes, but all that remain are fragments.

Masque of the Red Death

Masque of the Red Death

There was much of the beautiful, much of the wanton, much of the bizarre, something of the terrible, and not a little of that which might have excited disgust. To and fro in the seven chambers there stalked, in fact, a multitude of dreams. And these –the dreams–writhed in and about, taking hue from the rooms, and causing the wild music of the orchestra to seem as the echo of their steps.
- Edgar Allan Poe
